Book the trail before the journey
Choose a timed ticket on the official Caminito del Rey platform first. General admission is self-guided; the official guided ticket includes a certified guide. Tickets must be personalised after purchase, and anyone aged 8 to 17 must carry original identification and be accompanied by an adult. Children under 8 cannot enter.
Driving from Marbella
For the simplest plan, drive toward the north side and use the Visitor Reception Centre or an official parking area. The ticket time refers to the north access control point, not the car park. From the shortest tunnel by El Kiosko, the control point is about a 25-minute walk away. Arrive in the parking area at least one hour before the ticket time so the approach does not make you late.

Going without a car
Marbella has no railway station. Take a bus to Málaga, connect to a Renfe service for El Chorro-Caminito del Rey, then use the shuttle to reach the north entrance. Understand the one-way route
Entry is at Ardales in the north and the exit is at Álora, near El Chorro, in the south. The official estimate for the full visit is three to four hours, including the paths around the controlled boardwalk section. This is a linear route, so build the shuttle into the plan instead of expecting to walk back through the gorge.

A practical day plan
Keep the order simple and leave slack between each connection.
- Buy the official trail ticket and save it on your phone.
- Check the weather and any closure notice on the official site that morning.
- Reach the north-side parking area at least one hour before the ticket time, or time the Málaga and El Chorro connections before leaving Marbella.
- Walk to the north control point and be there at least 30 minutes before entry.
- Complete the route south toward El Chorro, then use the shuttle or your planned onward train connection.
What to carry
Wear closed, secure walking shoes. Flip-flops and heels are prohibited. The official recommendations say to bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, suitable clothing and sun protection. There are no toilets once you enter the route, and pets, walking poles, crutches, umbrellas and large backpacks are not allowed.
